Globalstar Satellite Services...
Digital Voice Telephony
Globalstar voice services utilize Qualcomm's IS-95 satellite CDMA technology for crystal clear voice quality.
All outbound calls initiated within North America to Globalstar USA phones cost the calling party only US domestic long distance rates, regardless of the phone's location. Further, Globalstar is the only satellite phone operator in the world to have a United States numbering plan (254 area code).
Packet and Asynchronous Data Services
Globalstar USA provides a 9600 bps uncompressed channel for voice and data connections. Realized data throughput without compression and accounting for overhead messaging averages approximately 8 kbps. Packet data services with direct Internet connectivity achieved by dialing #777 from any Globalstar user terminal, is available throughout the North American continent. Globalstar also provides asynchronous data services enabling the customer to access their own ISP, VPN, FTP, or other access hub by dialing their local access point 1-NPA-NXX-xxxx.
In order to establish a data connection, a laptop PC or other portable computing device, such as a PDA, can be connected to the Globalstar phone using specialized cables available from Globalstar USA. Connections may be made to the serial port or the USB port on the PC or to the data port of the PDA. Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, and Palm OS systems are all supported. Asynchronous and packet data calls are billed by the minute at the same rate as voice calls.

Globalstar USA can utilize standard commercial data compression software packages to achieve effective data throughput rates up to 56 kbps. Many of these software packages require the software to be installed at both ends of the asynchronous data connection. As an option, Globalstar USA can offer specific proven vendor-supplied compression software optimized for the Globalstar network.
Users may also subscribe to an electronic based fax service utilizing the 9.6 kb/s data channel to receive and send facsimile messages from a computer.

Globalstar mobile handsets provide latitude and longitude of the user's current position with an accuracy from 100 yards to 6 Miles, with an average being 300 yards.
